Why Do I Have Irregular Periods After Childbirth?

Why Do I Have Irregular Periods After Childbirth? A child is the best gift a woman can get from God. A child is a treasure, and a life companion. However, having a child changes a woman’s life completely. It causes both physical and psychological changes. The hormonal chemistry changes as it tries to maintain the new equilibrium after childbirth.

Irregular Periods After Childbirth?

Well, this is a question many ask. Whether you are breastfeeding or not, your body experiences hormonal imbalances after birth which lead to irregular periods. Therefore, this is a normal phenomenon that you should not be worried about. Pregnancy naturally changes your hormonal levels and after childbirth, the body requires to return your hormone levels to their former positions, a process that takes time.

The main side effect of this transition is amenorrhea; which is the absence of menstruation. If you are not breastfeeding and you have irregular periods, there is no need to worry. It is a symptom of hormonal imbalance which will return to normal after some time. In fact, your periods will continue to be irregular for a shorter time than those breastfeeding since breastfeeding can cause a period halt and normal menstruation may not occur until the child is weaned.

Tips For Dealing With Irregular Periods

Having irregular periods can not only be inconvenient but also distressing and painful. The following are tips that can help you deal with irregular periods after childbirth;

 Avoid birth control pills

Dealing with irregular periods is a hormonal treatment. Birth control pills will cause more hormonal imbalances. If sexually active, use condoms or other non-hormonal methods of birth-control until your menstruation return to normal. If your periods fail to return to normal after a long time and you are not breastfeeding, consult a doctor.

 Eat a balanced diet

If normal hormone levels return, normal menstruation will return. Eating a balanced diet with a lot of fruits, vegetables, grains and drinking a lot of water accompanied by regular exercises will be effective in restoring normal hormone levels hence normal menstruation.
