Signs and Symptoms of Vitamin D deficiency! Vitamin D deficiency (also called sunshine vitamin deficiency) is mostly common in adults of every age bracket who either have limited outdoor activities or who frequently put on sun protection. About fifty percent of the general population is estimated to be suffering from sunshine vitamin deficiency.

 People with darker skin and those above fifty years stand a higher chance of suffering from vitamin D deficiency. Although vitamin D deficiency can only be confirmed by a blood test and following are some of the signs and symptoms of its deficiency.

1. Having bone aches

Bone pains, aches and fatigue are classic symptoms and signs of vitamin D deficiency. With  this deficiency, it is very hard for the skeleton’s collagen matrix to absorb calcium from the body. The result of this is bone aches and pain.

2. Sweating on the head

A sweaty head is another clear sign and symptom of vitamin D deficiency. Sweating in the head is mostly due to neuromuscular irritability. If you constantly sweat on the head even when you are not involved in any exercise or work, consult a physician immediately.

3. Experiencing gut trouble

Vitamin D is one of the fat-soluble vitamins. Any gastrointestinal issue that affects the body’s ability to absorb and assimilate fat causes a low intake of vitamin D into the body, causing its deficiency. Gut conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease, non-celiac and celiac gluten sensitivity and Crohn’s are obvious symptoms  and signs of deficiency of this vital vitamin in the body.

4. Muscle weakness

Vitamin D is a vitamin as well as a hormone and vitamin D receptors are located all the parts of the body which includes the brain and the muscles. With vitamin D deficiency, these receptors become inactive hence muscle weakness.

5. Low or impaired immunity

If you have been catching every cold and fever that comes along, then that could be a sign of vitamin D deficiency. The receptors for vitamin D are evenly distributed all over the body. According to a study published in 2006 in the Medical Journal, it was confirmed that people suffering from vitamin D deficiency are at a higher risk of contracting flu. Less exposure to sunlight causes vitamin D deficiency which leads to an impaired immunity hence more flu.

6. High blood pressure

High blood pressure could be an indication that you are suffering from vitamin D deficiency. The body, via a complex enzymatic process forms a peptide that increases blood pressure through artery constriction. With low levels of vitamin D, this process is suppressed and the activation rate of the peptide is lowered. Low amounts of vitamin D causes blood pressure to rise.
